BLUES

The first blues album I ever heard was East West (Paul Butterfield) in 1966 on my 14th birthday and I learned every note. Ten years later I was hired to play with the drummer off that record, Sam Lay for a week long gig at the King Edward Hotel in Calgary.

Shortly after that I became a first call keyboard choice for visiting blues artists including Otis Rush, Bo Diddley and Amos Garrett. Recently I headlined a blues show on Salt Spring Island for the Blues and Jazz Society.

I had the incredible good fortune of connecting with blues producer Holger Peterson as the manager of my first band Manna He received the Order of Canada for his leadership in promoting blues as a blues show radio host and the many albums he produced for his blues label Stony Plain Records.

“My deep respect for Jan and his music goes way back. He is one of most well rounded, and talented composers, musicians, arrangers and producers I’ve worked with. Always easy going, and a ton of fun. We started doing projects together years ago and I look forward to many more.”

Baby Please by Johnny Johnson
Holger hired me to produce a posthumous album of Johnny Johnson duets with Jay McShann.

I now live in Victoria B.C. where I continue to record and perform my songs.
