Palms Inspired Dining

A year of lots of solo piano at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, SoulFire ripping it up with shows at The Coda and Blue Frog Studios, Canadian ConTENT and Jazz with Barbara at the Edmonton Fringe Festival, Endeavor Brewing, Palms Inspired Kitchen & Cocktails, Salt Spring Island and the Sunshine Coast.

A year of moving between Victoria and Alberta, with performances at Hermann’s Jazz Club, the Yardbird Suite, The Blue Chair, the Arden Theatre and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. SoulFire took Jan to both Victoria and Edmonton, while Canadian ConTENT brought Jan, Barbara Leah Meyer and Bill Werthmann to Edmonton venues including La Cité francophone, Endeavor Brewing and The Blue Chair. The year also included the Salt Spring Jazz & Blues Society and regular appearances at The Coda and Palms Inspired Dining.

One of Jan’s busiest performing years, with 72 shows ranging from jazz clubs and festivals to hotels, theatres, comedy nights and private events. Highlights included the Duncan 39 Days Music Festival, Alvin’s Jazz Club and the King Eddy Hotel in Calgary, Hermann’s Jazz Club, the Empress Hotel, Victoria Event Centre, Government House and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Jan also appeared as bandleader/sidekick with Nash Park and performed regularly with drummer Bert Hamer at The Loft.

A year that continued the expansion from solo piano into ensemble performance, including Jan Randall Jazz Trio appearances and performances around Victoria and the Gulf Islands. The music moved between jazz clubs, pubs, festivals, hotels and community stages, building the local performance base that would lead into the exceptionally busy 2024 season.

As live music returned, Jan began rebuilding a regular performance schedule after the pandemic interruption. The emphasis was on getting back into rooms with audiences—playing piano, developing the jazz repertoire and reconnecting with the Victoria music community.

Years of songwriting, piano performance and collaboration, developing the mixture of jazz, blues, humour and original songs that now defines Jan’s live shows. Focus in this period was creating a publishing arm of his classical sheet music Vista Height Music with distribution in music stores across Canada and inclusion in the Canadian Conservatory syllabust, today reborn as Midnight Garden Music.

Where did the years go? In part towards- A degree in Composition, a scholarship to Banff, AMPIA and BMI composition awards, Musical Directing and composing for theatre, Improvising as a comedy pioneer with Second City, creating music for hundreds of soundtracks and a live broadcasts of World Skating Championships and IAAF World Athletics to billions of viewers.
